Tigers split matches in final weekend of fall action

The Colorado College women's tennis team split games over the weekend while playing matches at the U.S. Air Force Academy on Oct. 14-15. The Tigers began the weekend beating Division II University of Texas of the Permian Basin, 6-3 on Friday. Division I Air Force defeated CC, 9-0 in the Tigers' final game of the weekend on Saturday.

CC began the weekend with the singles competition against the UTPB. The Tigers won four of its six single matches to take the early lead over the Falcons.

Senior Deanna Thirkell started CC on the right foot with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Breigh Shotwell at the No. 1 singles spot.

Sophomore Katie Patterson and freshman Maggie Harwood each had to battle in extra sets during their singles matches. Harwood came up with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-4 victory over Brittany Farmer at No. 5 singles, while Patterson came up short to Ynez Sanchez, falling 6-4, 7-6, 10-7 in No. 2 singles action.

Freshman Leeya Maizles swept Tiffany Mitchell, 6-0, 6-0 to earn her first win of the season at the No. 6 singles spot. Freshman Mary Edman won her match at No. 4 singles against Jordan Turner, 6-1, 6-3.

Sophomore Caila criss dropped her singles match against Olivia Baltazar, 6-3, 6-4.

The Tigers finished the day taking two doubles matches against the Falcons.

It was a battle of youth at the No. 2 doubles spot as freshman duo Edman and Harwood defeated the freshman duo of Sanchez and Turner, 9-8 to earn the first doubles point for CC.

Sophomores Maddy Bush and Criss got the second double point for the Tigers, defeating Farmer and Mitchell, 8-3 to close out the day in No. 3 doubles play.

Thirkell and Patterson dropped their doubles match to Shotwell and Baltazar, 8-6 at the No. 1 doubles spot.

Colorado College finished the weekend taking on the Air Force Falcons on Saturday.

Maizels had a good showing for the Tigers at the No. 6 singles spot against Air Force, falling just shy to Ali Preiss, 7-5, 7-6 in only her second match of the season.
