Mauk propels CC past Adams State

Senior James Mauk struck for a career-high six goals and added a pair of assists to lead Colorado College to a 20-9 victory over Adams State College on Tuesday night at Washburn Field.

Sophomore midfielder Travis Voges and freshman attackman Jake Smith each added four goals and an assist as Colorado College improved to 14-0. 

The Grizzlies pulled to within 12-8 on the first of two goals by freshman midfielder Anthony Willner midway through the third period, but the Tigers closed out the game with an 8-1 run to reach the 20-goal mark for the sixth time this season. 

Colorado College launched 65 shots, compared to 27 for Adams State. Freshman goalie Dakota Hunter steered aside 21 shots to keep the Grizzlies close. 

Freshman goaltender Zach Steedman made 11 saves for the Tigers. Chris Kolodey caused four turnovers, while Ian Coughlan forced three turnovers and grabbed four ground balls. 

Mauk gave an indication of what was to come when he ripped a shot past Hunter 7:17 into the game. Anthony Damico tied the game with 4:25 remaining in the first period and then he put the Grizzlies ahead, 2-1, when he scored a man-up goal 2:42 later. Damico finished with three goals, while Mac Piper and Willner found the net twice. 

Smith ignited a 5-0 run with 1:18 to play in the period and Carson Christman put Colorado College ahead for good when he found the net 1:07 into the second period. 

CC took its largest lead of the half when Voges tallied for the second time with 1:30 remaining on the clock, but Damico got the goal back 53 seconds later to trim the Tigers' lead to 9-5 after 30 minutes. 

Willner had a game-high 15 ground balls for Adams State, which finished its inaugural season with a 1-10 record. 

Colorado College wraps up the regular season on Saturday at Whittier College. The bracket for the 2011 Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship will be unveiled on Sunday night.
