Tigers fall to Rhodes in SCAC tourney

Box Score Colorado College fell to Rhodes College, 71-58, in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship on Friday afternoon in Birmingham, Ala.
 
The Tigers were unable to find its rhythm offensively, turning the ball over 24 times. CC's miscues led directly to 22 points for the Lynx.
 
Junior forward Sarah Gunkel led Colorado College with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while freshman forward Shelby Hanssen added 12 points.
 
Sarah Johnson helped Rhodes jump out to a quick 8-0 lead when she hit a jumper 24 seconds into the game. Rhodes continued to extend its lead going on a 12-4 run after CC made a pair of layups to score its first points of the game with 16:00 left on the clock.
 
Gunkel helped ignite a 6-0 run for the Tigers when she went in for a layup with 9:54 left in the half. Hanssen hit a jump shot and Gunkel made another layup to complete the run and cut the Lynx's lead to 20-14 with 7:20 left on the clock.
 
That was as close as CC could get, as Rhodes went on a 12-6 run to close out the half and take a 32-20 after 20 minutes.  
 
Colorado College used a 10-6 run to open the second half to pull to within eight points after senior forward Becky Luetjen made a pair of free throws with 14:36 left in the game. But the Tigers were unable to overcome its first-half woes and Rhodes pulled away to a 71-58 victory.
 
Luetjen grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and added eight points. Junior Marissa Gradoz dished out a team-high four assists to help ignite the Tiger offense.
 
Colorado College came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed in the West Division and finished the season with a 14-12 overall record. Rhodes, the No. 3 seed out of the East Division improved to 18-7 on the season.
 
Sharwil Bell led the Lynx with 21 points and grabbed six rebounds. Johnson added 13 points and dished out a game-high five assists. Jamie Maxey led RC with seven rebounds.
