Deanna Thirkell and Mary Edman each won their singles and doubles matches, but the Colorado College women's tennis team came up short in a close 5-4 loss to Southwestern University on Sunday morning in San Antonio, Texas.
 
Thirkell and Edman began the day as they partnered for an 8-3 victory over Elyse Bigler and Jessica Gaines at No. 1 doubles.
 
Katie Patterson and Caila Criss combined for an 8-6 victory against Aimee Blake and Victoria DeLeon at No. 2 doubles to help CC take an early 2-1 advantage against the Pirates.
 
“It was a great college tennis match,” said head coach Todd Doebler. “We started with strong doubles play and this continued into many exciting singles matches.”
 
Thirkell earned her second win of the day at No. 1 singles during a tough three-set match. The senior came from behind after dropping her first set 6-2 to take the final sets. Down 3-0 during her second set, Thirkell battled back to take a 6-4 decision and earned the victory with a 6-3 win in the third and final set. Thirkell improved to 13-4 on the season at the No. 1 singles position.
 
Edman earned the final win for CC in her second victory of the day at No. 5 singles. The freshman beat Kindall Hogenson 6-3, 6-3 to improve to 6-3 on the season at the No. 5 singles position.
 
Maddy Bush had a tough match at the No. 4 singles position, but came up on the wrong side. Bush took the first set with a 6-4 win over Blake, but was unable to pull through with the victory, falling 6-3, 6-3 in the final two sets.
 
“We played really well and left everything we had on the court,” said Doebler. “It was a very impressive effort, especially after playing as many matches as we have in such a short period of time.
 
“As coaches, we are really proud of the ladies progress.”
 
Colorado College moved to 9-8 on the season and takes a couple weeks off to rest up before playing Division II Colorado Christian University on April 19 at 2 p.m.
