Box Score Colorado College took over first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 15-4 victory at Southwestern University in the first of back-to-back games on Sunday.
The Tigers allowed fewer than five goals for the fifth time this season and they broke the contest open with eight unanswered tallies in the second quarter to build an 11-0 lead after 30 minutes.
Junior attackman
Tyler Allen struck for two of his three markers during the first quarter to help CC take a 3-0 lead. He added an assist later in the half to finish with four points.
Senior attacker
Charles Curtis, who finished with a pair of tallies and three assists, scored 48 seconds into the second frame, and sophomore midfielder
Henri Halle added the deciding marker 27 seconds later while the Tigers were playing one man up.
At the other end of the field, the Pirates managed just one shot during the second quarter and took only nine in the first half.
Sophomore midfielder
Sayre Thomas won six of eight faceoffs and grabbed a team-high five ground balls to pace the Tigers' defense. Freshman close defender
Tim Jenkins caused four turnovers.
Senior attackman
Steve Rijo led the Tigers with four goals.
Jeremy Tufnell put the Pirates on the board 2:20 into the second half, but CC answered with the next four goals to extend its lead to 15-1 after freshman attackman
Evan Meister found the net 59 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Jeremy Long struck for a pair of goals and set up another tally during the final 11:30 to trim Colorado College's margin of victory to 11 points. Tufnell also finished with two goals.
First-year goaltender
Chase Murphy made nine saves for the Tigers, who finished with a 45-23 advantage in total shots. Charlie Fisher stopped 14 shots for the Pirates.
CC recorded a 46-23 edge in ground balls and won 16 of 21 faceoffs.
Colorado College (8-4) plays host to the University of Dallas on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m.
