Hatch Hits Milestone In Loss to Hardin-Simmons

Box Score Senior forward John Hatch became the 21st player in the history of Colorado College men's basketball to score 1,000 career points, but the Tigers dropped a heartbreaker in overtime in the final game of the 2017 Pikes Peak Holiday Classic.

Tournament MVP Caleb Spoon poured in a game-high 32 points to help Hardin-Simmons University escape Reid Arena with an 84-81 victory on Saturday night. The senior guard connected on six three-pointers to help the Cowboys improve to 4-8.

Hatch hit the 1,000-point mark with two seconds remaining in the first half when his turnaround jumper from the left side gave the Tigers a 37-34 lead. He finished the contest with 17 points and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

He sent the game to overtime when he dialed long distance from the left corner with 23 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Cowboys took the lead for good when freshman forward C.J. Rice scored on an uncontested layup 30 seconds into overtime.

After falling behind 78-75, CC cut its deficit one on a pair of free throws by Hatch. That however, was as close as the Tigers would get.

HSU hit six of seven free-throw attempts during the final 1:14 to seal the victory.

Colorado College held a 46-40 lead 6:02 into the second half when sophomore forward CooXooEii Black scored two of his career-high 26 points on a slam off of a feed from Hatch. Black also was named to the all-tournament team

On this night however, foul trouble and injuries prevented the Tigers from maintaining the lead.

Despite playing the final 11:51 with four fouls, senior guard Eric Houska finished with 16 points and seven assists.

With his first assist of the game that set up junior guard Edmund Pendleton's first three-pointer, Houska moved into sole possession of fifth place on the program's career list. He finished the game with a four-season total of 328.

Pendleton finished with a season-high 13 points.

Senior winger Ryan Young and Black also finished the game with four fouls, which limited their ability to play tight defense with the game on the line.

CC went into the game without senior guard Bobby Roth and senior forward Chris Martin, who was injured during Friday's victory over Cornell College.

The Tigers return to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play next week when they visit Schreiner University and Trinity University on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
