Box Score Colorado College built a six-goal lead early in the fourth quarter and then withstood a furious rally by Williams College to record a heart-stopping 14-13 victory on Thursday afternoon at Washburn Field.
Junior attackman
Robbie Stern struck for back-to-back goals early in the fourth quarter to cap a 5-0 run that gave CC a 13-7 lead with 12:40 remaining in the contest.
However, attackmen Kevin Stump and senior Michael Fahey scored two goals apiece and junior midfielder Chris McLaughlin found the net with 7:34 to play to pull the Ephs to within 13-12.
With the Tigers in desperate need of a score to slow the Williams momentum, senior attackman
Austin Davie stepped up and delivered the biggest goal of the game with 5:16 to go.
After allowing five goals in a little more than three minutes, the Colorado College defense rose to the occasion and kept the Ephs at Bay until freshman midfielder John Hincks notched his third marker of the game with just 1:15 on the clock.
Sophomore
Parker Woo won the ensuing faceoff and after a turnover, freshman goaltender
Andrew Harwood stopped a shot by the Eph's Thomas Fowler with 49 seconds to go.
Stern led the Tigers with four goals, while sophomore midfielder
Tyler Borko registered a game-high five points on three goals and a pair of assists.
Borko scored twice during CC's second five-goal spurt, the first with 11 seconds remaining in the third quarter and the next one 39 seconds into the fourth.
Davie finished with two goals and two assists, while sophomore midfielder Arron Maslow scored once and set up three others.
Woo won 19 of 30 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high 14 ground balls. Woo and Stern each recorded a pair of caused turnovers.
Williams led 4-1 after McLaughlin scored 6:17 into the game. Colorado College tied the game when freshman attackman
Coby Petau found the net early in the second quarter, and the Tigers led 6-4 after Davie and sophomore midfielder
Tom Haller scored 1:18 apart late in the period.
Stump scored four goals for Williams, which slipped to 4-3. Hincks finished with three goals and a pair of assists, while Fahey and McLaughlin struck two times apiece.
Freshman goaltender George Peele made 14 saves for the Ephs.
Sophomore midfielder Angus O'Rourke led Williams with five ground balls, while senior defender
Riley Hoffman caused a pair of turnovers. Â
CC finished the game with a 59-44 advantage in total shots and a 32-26 edge in ground balls.
The Tigers play host to Carthage College on Saturday at noon.
