Stern, Whinery Shine, but CC Falls to Griffins

Box Score Freshman goaltender Skylar Whinery recorded a season-high 14 saves, but the Westminster College men's lacrosse team overcame a three-goal deficit in the second half to escape Washburn Field with a 12-9 victory on Thursday night.

Whinery replaced starting goaltender Andrew Harwood with the Tigers ahead 3-1 with just over five minutes remaining in the first period.

Playing with the starting lineup for the remainder of the first half, Whinery's performance allowed CC to build a 7-5 halftime lead and then the Tigers went up 8-5 after sophomore attackman Ethan Moore scored 3:19 into the second quarter.

Freshman attackman Nick Marcy scored three goals in the third period to spark a five-goal run that gave the Griffins a 10-8 lead 12 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Colorado College pulled to within one when junior attackman Sam Sheridan came out from behind the left post and beat goaltender Connor McFarlane with 13:31 to go, but Westminster sealed the victory with a pair of late goals.

Junior attackman Robbie Stern scored three times for the Tigers during his 30 minutes of action and reached the 40-goal mark for the first time in his career. Freshman attackman Coby Petau scored a pair of markers during the first quarter to give CC a 3-1 lead.

The star for the Griffins was junior goaltender Connor McFarlane, who made 11 of his 17 saves during the first half against Colorado College's top point producers.  

Junior attackman Thomas Sarjeant led Westminster with four goals and a pair of assists. Marcy scored four times and set up one more.

Jake Berard and Troy Vance added a pair of goals for the Griffins, who improved to 4-5.

The Tigers finished with a 40-38 edge in total shots and a 37-36 edge in ground balls.

Colorado College plays host to the University of Dallas at 10 a.m. Saturday in the final home game of the regular season.
