The Whittier College men's lacrosse team erupted for seven consecutive goals midway through the third quarter and held on for a 17-12 victory over Colorado College on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
 
CC, which slipped to 10-5, saw its 11-game winning streak against the Poets come to an end. Prior to today, Whittier's most recent win against the Tigers was a 17-6 victory on March 19, 2007.
 
In desperate need of a victory to keep their postseason hopes alive, the Poets turned their sense of energy into an early 4-1 lead after senior attacker Nick Hernandez scored the third of his game-high six goals.
 
After senior midfielder 
Brad Hale trimmed the Colorado College deficit to 4-2 with four minutes remaining in the first quarter, Whittier tacked on four more goals to build an 8-2 lead with 6:22 to play before halftime.
 
Noting the deficit was the same as last year's overtime victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, CC struck for four consecutive goals and pulled to within 8-6 when junior attackman 
Robbie Stern scored the first of his team-leading five markers.
 
The Poets got a boost when Jackson Draper found the net with one second remaining in the first half and they re-gained a four-goal lead on a man-up tally by Evan Price 3:01 into the third quarter.
 
The Tigers mounted another comeback and cut its deficit in half when Stern and senior attacker 
Austin Davie scored six seconds apart, and then tied the game at 10-10 with 9:36 remaining in the quarter with back-to-back tallies from Stern in a span of 16 seconds.
 
Playing from behind caught up with Colorado College and Whittier capitalized by breaking the game open with seven straight goals.
 
Billy Shaffer ignited the run after taking a feed from Hernandez and Draper notched what proved to be the game winner with 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
 
The Poets extended their lead to seven when Price scored with just 6:13 remaining in the game, and the CC could only trim its deficit by two with late markers from Stern and Hale.
 
The Tigers prevailed in the statistical battles, winning 23 of 32 faceoffs and finishing with a 39-30 advantage in ground balls.
 
Sophomore 
Parker Woo won 22 of 31 faceoffs and led Colorado College with 13 ground balls.
 
The extra possessions allowed CC to launch 50 total shots, compared to 26 for Whittier.
 
Junior goaltender Alex Cramer came up big for the Poets, making 13 saves while earning his first victory against the Tigers in seven tries.
 
Freshman 
Andrew Harwood stopped two shots for Colorado College in 25 minutes of action. 
Skylar Whinery stopped three shots in relief.
 
In what could have been his last game for Whittier, Nick Hernandez recorded game highs with six goals and four assists.
 
The Tigers will learn their postseason fate when the bracket for the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship is unveiled on Sunday, May 7.
