Box Score The Colorado College defense came up big on Saturday afternoon, causing 10 turnovers while holding a sixth opponent to fewer than 10 goals in a 19-6 victory over Southwestern University at Washburn Field.
Â
Playing their first game since defeating Williams College on March 30, the CC offense was unable to find its rhythm during the first 30 minutes. The Tigers launched 27 shots in the first two quarters, only four of which eluded Pirate goaltender Kyle Kuberski.
Â
After Colorado College built a 4-0 lead on sophomore midfielder
Aaron Maslow's tally 38 seconds into the second frame, the Pirates fought back and closed to within one when junior attackman Matt Amerie scored with just seven sends to play before halftime.
Â
All of that changed during the second half, when the Tigers scored on eight of their 16 third-quarter shots.
Â
The momentum swung back in CC's favor when sophomore midfielder
Tom Haller rifled a low bouncer past Kuberski 44 seconds into the third quarter. A little more than a minute later, junior attackman
Robbie Stern scored the first of his game-high four goals that came during an 11-minute span when the Tigers extended their lead to 12-4.
Â
The onslaught continued in the fourth quarter when Colorado College added five more goals in the first five minutes to open a 17-4 lead.
Â
While the offense seemingly scored at will in the second half, the defense allowed only three more goals to a Southwestern team that had averaged more than 16 per game this season.
Â
One factor that helped the Tigers record a significant territorial advantage was the performance of sophomore midfielder
Parker Woo, who won 19 of 21 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high 13 ground balls.
Â
That performance helped CC amass a 40-25 advantage in ground balls.
Â
Freshman goaltender
Andrew Harwood stopped five shots during three quarters of action. Freshman
Skylar Whinery recorded a pair of saves in the fourth quarter.
Â
Amerie and sophomore attackman Jared Welsh led the Pirate attack with two goals apiece. Senior Matthew Montagne added a goal and two assists.
Â
Kuberski made 10 of his 11 saves during the first half to keep Southwestern within striking distance. Freshman Conrad Littleton stopped a pair of shots during the final 13:29.
Â
Freshman defender Tanner Wallace grabbed five ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers to lead the Pirate defense.
