Maslow, Tigers Shoot Down Whittier

Box Score Sophomore midfielder Aaron Maslow ignited a five-goal outburst during the latter stages of the third quarter as Colorado College posted a 13-9 victory over West Region rival Whittier College on Sunday afternoon at Washburn Field.

Maslow struck for a career-high three goals and set up another by sophomore midfielder Tom Haller as CC snapped a 7-7 tie and went to record its 11th consecutive victory over its long-time West Region rival.

Thirty-one seconds after senior attackman Nick Hernandez tied the score with his second goal of the game, Maslow gave the Tigers a lead they would not surrender. Four minutes later, his skip pass led to Haller's man-up tally, and then Maslow scored twice in a span of 57 seconds, including what proved to be the game winner with 3:24 to go in the third.

Junior attackman Robbie Stern's third marker with 1:25 remaining in the quarter gave Colorado College a 12-7 lead, it's largest of the game.

The Poets got two goals from sophomore midfielder Ashton Pieris during the fourth quarter, but senior midfielder Brad Hale scored for CC to prevent Whittier from mounting a more threatening comeback.

During the first half, senior attackman Austin Davie fueled a five-goal run that gave the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

After first-year attackman Evan Price struck twice in a span of 53 seconds to give the Poets the early advantage, Hale's first marker put Colorado College on the board.

Davie scored three consecutive goals to give CC a 4-2 lead, and then sophomore midfielder Tyler Borko grabbed a ground ball off of a Davie shot and rifled a shot past junior goaltender Alex Cramer to put the Tigers ahead by three.

Two goals from Stern gave Colorado College a 7-3 lead, but Price scored with 1:38 remaining in the first half and then Whittier scored the first three goals of the third quarter to knot the score.

Freshman goaltender Andrew Harwood made eight saves for CC, which improved to 9-3.

Sophomore midfielder Parker Woo won seven of 13 faceoffs and grabbed a game-high seven ground balls. Sophomore Hunter Henninger caused a pair of turnovers and added four ground balls.

Cramer stopped 14 shots for the Poets, who slipped to 7-4.

Price led Whittier with four goals, while Nick Hernandez finished with three scores and an assist.

The Locker-Stabler Cup will be on the line when the long-time rivals square off for the second time on Saturday, April 29, in Southern California.

Colorado College's next game is Thursday night against Westminster College.
