Andrew Harwood stopped 13 shots, but Roanoke College broke open a tight game with an 8-1 run and held on for a 15-10 victory over Colorado College in the season opener on Friday afternoon.

Harwood recorded double-digit saves for the eighth time in his career, but the Tigers were unable to control Roanoke first-year attackman Garritt Schwarz, who scored six of his game-high eight goals during a 15-minute span that gave his team a 12-5 lead after three quarters.

The Maroons grabbed an early 4-1 lead when Schwartz scored the second of back-to-back goals with 8:38 remaining in the second quarter, but a man-up tally by CC junior midfielder
Tyler Borko ignited a 3-0 run which leveled the score with 1:43 to play before the half.

Colorado College had a chance to take the lead, but a turnover during the final minute of the first half led to Schwarz's third score which put Roanoke ahead to stay at 5-4.

Schwarz scored twice during the first three minutes of the third quarter to give the Maroons a 7-4 lead, but Woo struck while Colorado College was a man down to trim its deficit to two.

The Maroons answered five consecutive markers to stretch their lead to 12-5 after three quarters.

Billy Hutchison pulled the Tigers to within 12-8, however Roanoke closed out the game by scoring three of the final five scores.

Stern led CC with three goals and an assist, while Gold finished with a goal and a helper.

Parker Woo won 14 of 24 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls. He also was one of seven Tigers who found the net once.

Schwarz was a one-man show for the Maroons, scoring eight goals and setting up one other.

Junior attackman Brendan Devane and sophomore attackman Jason Sarro each recorded two goals and two assists.

Senior defender Conn Curry led Roanoke with seven ground balls, while junior goaltender Ian Davies made 14 saves.

Colorado College finished with a 43-36 advantage in total shots, while the Maroons had a 43-38 edge in ground balls.
