Defense Steps Up as CC Rallies to Down Berry

Box Score Colorado College did not allow a goal during the final 26 minutes and the attack scored five unanswered goals as the Tigers rallied for an 11-8 victory over Berry College in a game that could have NCAA Tournament implications later in the season.

"I was really proud of the way we finished the game," head coach Sean Woods said. "We played a great defensive game and got an outstanding performance from goaltender Andrew Harwood."

The Vikings grabbed an 8-6 lead after sophomore Matthew Tatum and junior McKinley Gannon scored early in the second half, but those proved to be the last two shots that would elude Harwood.

From that point on, the Colorado College defense allowed just 14 shots, nine of which made it through to Harwood. The sophomore made nine of his career-high 18 saves during the final 26 minutes to give CC the time to mount its comeback.

Goals by junior midfielder Tyler Borko and senior attackman Robbie just 48 seconds apart leveled the score with 3:42 remaining in the third quarter. A little more than two minutes later, Borko struck for what proved to be the game winner off of a feed from Stern.

The Tigers doubled their lead when Borko struck for the last of his three markers 4:42 into the fourth quarter, and then junior midfielder Daniel Lunghamer added an insurance goal with 8:12 to play.

"Today was a great team win," Woods said. "Everyone contributed and we showed a lot of heart coming back from five different two-goal deficits."

Stern led the CC attack with four goals and an assist. Lunghamer scored once and set up another goal.

Freshman attackman John Sutro finished with a goal and picked up four ground balls for the Tigers.

Berry struck the first two goals and led 3-1 when Gannon scored 1:32 into the second quarter.

After Justin Westbrook gave the Vikings a 5-3 cushion midway through the second frame, Colorado College answered with three markers during a span of 1:14 to take its first lead of the game.

Back-to-back tallies by Stern tied the game at 5-5. Less than 30 seconds later, Max Rieser's unassisted goal gave the Tigers the lead with 1:12 remaining before halftime.

That advantage last just 13 second because Berry's Chris Berchock scored the first of his two goals while the Vikings were playing with an extra-man goal.

Gannon led Berry with three goals and three assists.

The Vikings finished the contest with a 42-38 edge in total shots and a 30-23 advantage in ground balls.

Sophomore goaltender Riley Brogdon stopped 16 shots for Berry, which slipped to 1-2.

CC, which improved to 1-1, returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 24, when the Tigers visit Division II Colorado State University-Pueblo at 1 p.m.
