Tigers Top Whittier, Win Locker-Stabler Cup

Box Score The Locker-Stabler Cup will spend the next year at Colorado College.

Sophomore attackman Coby Petau struck for five goals and set up one more to lead the Tigers to a 14-10 victory over Whittier College in the regular-season finale on Saturday afternoon at Washburn Field.

In addition to claiming possession of the cup for the seventh time in eight years, CC improved to 13-1 and strengthened its position for earning a berth in the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship.

Playing in his final regular-season home game, Robbie Stern scored three goals and added an assist to celebrate Senior Day in grand fashion. In eight career games against the Poets, the senior attacker scored 24 goals and dished out seven assists.

After Stern put the Tigers on the board a little more than three minutes into the game, Whittier took its only lead when senior midfielder Sigi Ocker scored back-to-back goals.

Colorado College tied the score 44 seconds later when Stern struck for the second of his three markers, and then sophomore attacker Coby Petau put CC ahead to stay when he notched a man-up tally with 3:12 remaining in the first quarter.

Just when it appeared the Tigers would settle for a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes, freshman attacker Boe Gold and junior midfielder Tyler Borko scored 22 seconds apart during the final minute of the quarter.

A score off the stick of Billy Schaffer pulled the Poets to within 5-3, however three goals in a span of 2:23 gave Colorado College an 8-3 lead. Ocker's third tally cut Whittier's deficit to four, and then Connor Dee gave the Poets another boost when he scored six seconds before halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Petau scored twice in a span of 21 seconds to give CC a 10-5 lead, and then junior midfielder Daniel Lunghamer struck for what proved to be the game winner just before the midway point of the frame.

Junior midfielder Tyler Borko scored twice during the final 3:52 to give the Tigers a 13-8 lead with 15 minutes to play, and then Stern struck for the final time 42 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Colorado College a six-goal cushion for the second time.

Whittier's Cooper Champagne scored a pair of unassisted goals during the final 11:17, but it was too little too late for the visitors, who finished the season with a 4-8 record.

In his first career start, freshman goaltender PJ Offner made seven saves for CC.

Freshman defender Drake Gillis caused three turnovers and grabbed a ground ball to lead the Colorado College defense.

Junior midfielder Parker Woo won all eight of his faceoffs and scooped up a team-leading five ground balls.

Senior Jackson Kaplan went 6-for-8 at the dot, while sophomore Ben Schwaeber won seven of 10 draws.

As a team, CC won 21 of 26 faceoffs and had a 25-22 edge in ground balls.

The extra possessions resulted in a 52-27 advantage in total shots for the Tigers.

Colorado College scored on two of six extra-man opportunities and did not allow a goal during three man-down situations, including a two-minute non-releasable penalty late in the fourth quarter.

Ocker recorded three goals and a pair of assists for the Poets, while Champagne scored twice and set up another goal.

Senior Alex Cramer played 55:10 in goal and finished with 14 saves. Freshman Austin Mann stopped five shots during his 4:50 in the cage.

The brackets for the 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship will be announced on Sunday, May 6.
