Playing two games in less than 24 hours proved to be too big of hurdle for the Colorado College men's lacrosse team to overcome.
Catholic University jumped out to a 6-1 lead and held off a furious comeback by the Tigers to post a 19-14 victory on Sunday at Carlini Field.
Trailing 12-5 early in the third quarter, the Tigers struck for five consecutive goals to cut their deficit to two.
Luca Lietti ignited the surge with his second goal of the game, then
Declan Maguire struck for the first of his three goals to cut the deficit to five.
CC kept the momentum by adding goals by
Sam DiMaio and Maguire in a span of 53 seconds, then
Dylan Wells pulled the Tigers to within 12-10 to close out the third-quarter scoring.
The Cardinals got desperately needed goals from Tynan Hillary and Sean Baudo to open a four-goal fourth quarter cushion 3:20 into the fourth quarter, but
Anders Erickson got one back for Colorado College 37 seconds later to trim the Cardinals' lead to 14-11.
With its lead down to three, Catholic answered with three goals in a span of 90 seconds regain control of the contest.
Goals by
Dylan Brown and Erickson pulled the Tigers to within 17-13 with 4:38 to play, but that was as close as CC would get. Â
Kevin Crowley scored seven goals and set up another for the Cardinals.
Catholic finished with a 52-38 advantage in total shots and a 51-39 edge in ground balls.
Ben Anastos stopped 17 shots for Colorado College, his fourth game this season and the ninth of his career with double-digit saves. Â
