Colorado College men's basketball head coach
Jeff Conarroe announced two additions to the CC coaching staff ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Former CC head coach Al Walker and former University of Portland guard Derrick Rodgers will join Conarroe and assistant coach
Matt Streich.
"We have been really lucky to find and hire two excellent assistant coaches," Conarroe said. "I feel like we have assembled a staff this year that can compare to those at the highest levels of basketball."
Walker returns to Colorado College, where he was the head coach from 1988 to 1993. During his tenure as the Tigers' head coach, Walker accumulated a record of 69-60 overall, including going 39-13 in the last two seasons. During the 1991-92 season, Walker and CC made the program's second NCAA Tournament appearance and finished with a 22-5 record, the most wins ever in a single season in CC history.
After that, he went to coach at Division I and NBA level, including as the head coach of Binghampton University from 2000-07, and oversaw the program transition from Division II to Division I. He was also an assistant in the University of Buffalo women's program from 2012-13.
In the NBA, Walker was an advance scout for the Charlotte Hornets, Orlando Magic, and New Orleans Pelicans and a personnel scout for the Detroit Pistons.
"Coach Al Walker brings a wealth of experience as a head coach at three different levels of college basketball and extensive experience at the NBA level," Conarroe said. "He has a great offensive mind and is already making a big impact on our program."
Derrick Rodgers had a successful collegiate career at the University of Portland from 2010-13. Rodgers played in 94 career games for the Pilots and was considered the best perimeter defender for the program during his tenure.
He racked up a career field goal percentage of .420 and helped lead the Pilots to a 20-12 record in his first year with the program. Before Portland, Rodgers played at Citrus College in California, where he started all 32 games at point guard his freshman year, led the Fighting Owls to a 29-3 overall record, and advanced to the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association state championship.
"Coach Derrick Rodgers is a former Division I point guard in the West Coast Conference and fits the defensive mindset of our program," Conarroe said. "He has a grit and experiences that our guys can learn from. He makes our program and team tougher, and tough teams win, but he also sees the game like a player and brings a lot of great insight."
Former CC assistant coach Ty Adams was hired as the new head coach of the University of Dallas women's basketball team. Adams helped lead the Tigers to their best record since the 2015-16 season and an appearance in the SCAC Tournament Championship game.
"We are so happy for Coach Adams and for him to realize his dream of being a college head coach," Conarroe said. "He was instrumental in helping our program grow into a nationally respected program, but we will miss his ability to connect with our players the most. He is loved and missed as a brother and mentor for all of us, but he leaves the program in a better place. We are confident he will quickly do the same thing at the University of Dallas."
