On Saturday. Sept. 13, the Colorado College women's soccer team volunteered at the Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado.
The Care and Share Food Bank is an all-volunteer-led organization that works out of a neighborhood garage and is the sole food bank that serves over 29 counties and spreads over 47,000 square miles.
The women's soccer team helped pack 518 boxes of food in only 2.5 hours. That is equal to 15,540 pounds of food that is going to be distributed across Colorado.
"Volunteering at Care and Share Food Bank was a powerful and meaningful experience for CC Soccer," head coach
Kelsey Brouwer said, who helped organize the effort.
When volunteers visit the food bank, they help gather donated, low-cost food from suppliers. They then sort all the food items and send them out to be distributed to those in need.
"Our team came together off the field to support a mission that truly matters—fighting hunger and ensuring no one in Southern Colorado goes without," Brouwer said. "Giving back is at the core of our program, and we're proud to have played a small part in helping our community."
According to Care & Share, one out of every nine Southern Coloradans is at risk of hunger. The organization exists to ensure that community members have access to healthy and nutritious food.
"The workers there were so helpful and made the whole experience really fun," senior
Makenna Kolson said. "We packed over 15,000lbs of food and more than 500 boxes that will be shipped out over the next couple of weeks. The food bank serves many people in need, and contributing by supporting the packing process is deeply rewarding."
The organization has 291 partners to whom the food gets distributed.
"It was an incredible experience," sophomore
Meli Coats said. "We got to incorporate our communication and multitasking skills to create a fluid working environment. It was very fulfilling for all of us to have been able to serve our community and make an impact while getting the opportunity to learn more about what goes into food packaging."
Care and Share runs entirely on volunteers. The Tigers were one of numerous groups that contributed over 47,000 hours to help deliver nutritious food to hunger relief partners and neighbors in need.
