It took 13 shots on goal before Lady Luck smiled on
Bill Sweatt, but Colorado College's speedy left winger persevered in the end.
Sweatt struck for the go-ahead goal at 2:45 of the third period on Saturday, igniting a 4-2 victory over Michigan Tech that gave the Tigers a sweep of their WCHA season-opening series at the World Arena.
Third-ranked CC improved to 4-0 overall. The Huskies dropped to 1-3.
A power-play goal by sophomore right wing
Stephen Schultz at 9:57 of the final frame proved to be the game winner after Tech's Brett Olson pulled the visitors to within 3-2 with 22 seconds left to play.
Eric Walsky's empty-net tap-in, his second tally of the night, sealed the triumph with 1.8 seconds remaining. Sophomore goalie
Richard Bachman backstopped the victory with 33 saves.
Sweatt, who led the team with eight shots in Friday's 2-0 triumph and had only an assist to show for it, could not beat Huskies goaltender Rob Nolan on his first four attempts Saturday. He made no mistake on the fifth, however, finding the upper corner of the net on Nolan's glove side after taking a pass from Walsky in the slot.
Chad Rau, who finished with three assists, also helped set up Sweatt's red lighter. Junior center
Andreas Vlassopoulos and junior defenseman
Brian Connelly assisted on the goal by Schultz that put CC up, 4-2.
While defeating MTU for just the third time in the last nine games between the teams overall, the Tigers have won all 18 regular-season meetings played at the World Arena.
The Huskies went 0-for-7 on the power play for the second consecutive night. Colorado College, which has yet to allow a power-play goal this season, converted on two of eight opportunities.
