Tigers rally to upset No. 7 Trinity

The Colorado College volleyball team came from behind to upset No. 7 Trinity University in its final match of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference crossover matches on Saturday night at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.

The Tigers came from behind to post a 22-25, 25-20, 25-20, 26-24 victory in front of a pro-Trinity crowd. TU is the highest-ranked opponent CC has defeated since it won at No. 6 Trinity on Oct. 28, 2000.

Colorado College finished the weekend with a 22-9 overall record and a 12-4 mark in the SCAC.

“We've told them all along that they can play with anybody,” head coach Rick Swan said. “They just need to go out and work hard on every point.”

The loss is only the second for Trinity in conference play in the last 10 seasons.

Senior outside hitter Anna Clithero had 16 kills, 17 digs and four blocks to lead the Tigers. Sophomore middle blocker Emily Perkins added 15 kills and a team-high 20 digs.

It was a perfect ending to a four-match weekend that started with CC giving up a two-set lead in a five-set loss to DePauw.

Colorado College bounced back on Friday with a three-set win over Hendrix College, and then defeated Oglethorpe University 25-7, 25-16, 25-18 on Saturday afternoon.

“The loss to DePauw was frustrating because we had beaten them earlier in the season,” Swan said. “We made a lot of unforced errors that kept them in the match. We kept the pressure on Trinity by playing aggressively.”

Colorado College will close out the regular season with three non-conference matches, beginning next Friday when the Tigers play host to Cornell College.
