The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh volleyball team overcame a five-point deficit midway through the fifth to defeat host Colorado College and claim the title at the 2008 Molten Volleyball Pikes Peak Challenge.
The Titans improved to 4-0 with the 20-25, 25-11, 26-24, 25-15, 18-16 victory that was every bit as close as the scores would indicate and didn't end until senior middle blocker Valerie Yost's mishit dropped between three Tiger defenders.
Colorado College slipped to 3-1, but made a strong case to be ranked just behind UWO in the Division III poll despite having a lineup that includes three freshmen and two sophomores.
Junior setter Katelyn Vara was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She was joined on the all-tournament team by junior outside hitter Megan Fischer and sophomore libero Christina Cahoon, who had 30 digs against the Tigers.
Yost had a team-high 13 kills to lead four Titans in double figures. Sophomore outside hitter Andrea Smith had 12, while Fischer and junior middle blocker Jacque Ray added 11 apiece.
Colorado College was paced by senior outside hitter
Anna Clithero, who posted a double-double with 13 kills and 23 digs, and sophomore middle blocker
Emily Perkins, who had 13 kills and five blocked shots. Perkins and senior outside hitter
Laura McQuaid were named to the all-tournament team.
The rest of the all-tournament team included UW-Platteville's Rachel Chapman and Melissa Hillebrand, and the College of St. Catherine's Maria Hoffman.
The Tigers began the day with a 25-15, 23-25, 25-18, 25-10 victory over Colby-Sawyer College. Perkins had 14 kills and three blocks, while Clithero had 13 kills and eight digs.
Colorado College will host the second of its three non-conference tournaments next weekend when George Fox University, University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Wisconsin-Stout visit for the Colorado College Invitational.
