Tigers come out flying in exhibition victory

CC defeats Lethbridge, 5-1, to open season

Now that the butterflies are gone, Colorado College's youngsters can look ahead to bigger and better things.

CC, whose roster of 26 players includes 16 freshmen and sophomores, fashioned an impressive season debut on Friday by defeating the University of Lethbridge, 5-1, in exhibition play at the World Arena.

Five different Tigers, representing all four classes, scored in the triumph. Thirteen collected at least an assist, with junior defenseman Gabe Guentzel collecting a pair to finish as the only player with more than one point.

Freshman Josh Thorimbert and senior Tyler O'Brien shared the goaltending duties as the visiting Pronghorns from Alberta, Canada, managed only 11 shots on net. Thorimbert, who started, faced just four and stopped all of them in his 40 minutes between the pipes while O'Brien steered away six of seven in the third period.

Three tallies in the middle frame – by sophomores Rylan Schwartz and Andrew Hamburg, as well as freshman Jeff Collett – staked Colorado College to a commanding 4-0 lead before Lethbridge's Daniel Iwanski beat O'Brien with a rising blast from the left faceoff circle with 10:48 left to play.

Senior Tyler Johnson struck for CC's first goal at 15:42 of the opening period. Junior Nick Dineen responded for the team's fifth just 2:25 after Iwanski spoiled the shutout bid.

The prettiest goal of the night came when Collett finished a nice passing play from sophomore Scott Winkler and fellow freshman Alexander Krushelnyski to cap the second-period explosion.

The Tigers resume action on Sunday with another exhibition game at the CSWA against the United States Under-18 Team. Faceoff is 6:07 p.m.
