Colorado College passed another early test on Sunday. Now it's time to start playing for keeps.
In very similar fashion to the previous night, when they had no trouble at all with the University of Lethbridge, the Tigers concluded their season-opening weekend of exhibition play at the World Arena with a 7-1 victory over the United States Under-18 Team.
Once again, members of all four classes contributed goals in a balanced offensive display. Twelve different players collected at least one point. And for now, heading into next weekend's two-game series against ECAC opponent Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, this confident young team has some momentum brewing in its favor.
CC converted on three of five power-play opportunities while scoring once in the first period, twice within 22 seconds midway through the second, and four more times in the third. Senior Tyler Johnson, junior
Nick Dineen and sophomore
Rylan Schwartz struck for the second consecutive contest. Also lighting the lamp were freshmen forwards
Alexander Krushelnyski, who tallied twice, and
Jaden Schwartz, as well as junior defenseman
Gabe Guentzel.
Jaden Schwartz added a pair of assists.
The Tigers peppered Team USA goaltender Matt McNeely with 51 shots on net, eventually wearing the Burnsville, Minn., native down after launching 24 of those attempts in the middle frame. McNeely went the distance and made 44 saves.
Sophomore
Joe Howe stopped 13 of the 14 shots he faced at the other end of the ice, allowing only a second-period goal by Adam Reid on a 3-on-0 break during an ill-advised line change by CC. Senior
Tyler O'Brien played the final 9:40 and finished with three saves.
