McDaniel hangs on to defeat Tigers

McDaniel College built a three-goal lead with 14:48 remaining in the game and then survived a furious comeback by Colorado College to escape with a 10-9 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Washburn Field.

The Tigers trailed 9-6 when Matt Dean scored an unassisted goal with 6:54 remaining in the game, but Carson Christman and Moses Taylor scored 16 seconds apart to pull CC to within 9-8 with 2:28 to play.

D.J. Rickels gave the Green Terror a two-goal advantage with 1:23 to go, only to see James Mauk counter with his fourth goal to make the score 10-9 with 55 seconds left. The Tigers had a chance to tie the game during the final 20 seconds, but an errant pass from behind the cage sailed out of bounds at midfield and McDaniel ran out the clock.

In a game that was a statistical draw, goaltender Brad Motley proved to be the difference for the Green Terror. Motley made seven of his 11 saves during the first half when McDaniel committed 11 of its 18 turnovers.

Brendan Haas stopped seven of 17 shots on goal for the Tigers.

The Green Terror took three one-goal leads during the first half, but each time the Tigers answered in three minutes or less. Mauk tied the game twice, including his second goal with 5:44 to play which made the score 3-3 after 30 minutes.

Jed Barnes and William Clary scored in a span of 2:21 to give McDaniel a 5-3 lead 3:39 into the second half, and then after Carson Christman trimmed CC's deficit to 5-4 midway through the period, Gibbs Preston and D.J. Rickels gave the Green Terror the first of three three-goal lead.

Christman had a game-high five points with two goals and three assists, while Taylor added a pair of scores for Colorado College.

Rickels led McDaniel with two goals and an assist, while Clary and Preston found the net twice.

The Tigers slipped to 2-1 against NCAA competition, while the Green Terror evened its record at 3-3.

Colorado College returns to action on Saturday against Fontbonne University.
