Defanti helps CC rally to defeat Sewanee

Senior midfielder Maggie Defanti made her final game at Colorado College a memorable one.

Defanti struck for three goals, including her third game winner of the season, and set up two others to help the Tigers come from behind for an 18-11 victory over Sewanee: The University of the South on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.

Gioia Garden and Grace Maloney added four goals apiece as the Colorado College offense exploded for its highest point total of the season. Maloney also had two assists for a game-high six points.

Marissa McGrann scored once and added a team-high three assists as the CC seniors contributed seven goals and six assists during their final home game. Holly McHugh, Scarlett Prati and starting goaltender Valerie Cranmer also scored for the black and gold.

Defanti rattled the cage twice and assisted on another score during an 11-0 run that saw Colorado College turn an 8-5 deficit into a 16-8 lead when Claire Draudt buried a free-position shot with 20:07 remaining in the second half.

The only thing that slowed CC down was a 46-minute lightning delay with 17 minutes remaining in the second half. The remainder of the game was played in a combination of snow and rain.

When the game resumed, Prati and Maloney scored man-down goals 39 seconds apart within the first minute. After Draudt added her second goal with 9:21 to play, Molly Arnold put an end to the Colorado College run with the first of her two goals.

Sewanee's Carly Grimm opened the scoring 3:39 into the game, but the hosts answered with four consecutive goals during a span of 7:33 to take a 4-1 lead on Garden's first goal with 18:24 remaining in the first half.

Megan Velie and Meg Welton each scored twice to trigger an 8-1 run that gave the University of the South a three-goal lead 3:13 into the second half. Welton led the visitors with three goals and an assist, and had a game-high six ground balls.

Cranmer made five saves during the first half for CC, while Abby Fink added five during the closing 30 minutes. Theresa Monypeny absorbed the loss after allowing four goals on four shots during the first 5:58 of the second half. Starting goaltender Amy Nusbaum finished with 11 saves in 54:02 between the pipes.

Defanti and McGrann paced the Colorado College defense with three ground balls and three caused turnovers apiece.

CC played a man-down for a total of nine minutes, outscoring UOS 3-1 during that time.

Colorado College finished the season with an 8-5 record. Sewanee slipped to 13-4.
