Jackson Brainerd, who earned All-America status in cross country as a sophomore last fall, now has a shot at repeating the feat in track and field.
Brainerd's altitude-adjusted clocking of 3:50.97 in the 1,500 meters earlier this spring stood up among the nation's top 15 performances and earned him a provisional berth at the NCAA Division III championship meet that starts Thursday at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
Brainerd currently ranks 11th in the country.
Junior teammate
Andrew Wagner missed the cut by about a tenth of a second after last Saturday's "last-chance" race at North Central College in Naperville, Ill., where he and Brainerd turned in sparkling performances. Wagner's time of 3:52.87 was good enough for fourth place, right behind Brainerd, who took third at 3:52.51. More than 75 athletes competed in the race.
Wagner ran a 3:52.03 earlier in the season, which ranks 20th nationally.
Also on Friday, at North Central, junior Brad Dsida broke his own school record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.69. Dsida, who won his heat, finished fifth overall in a field of more than 50 runners to end his season on a great note. He previously set a new CC standard on May 8, with a 1:53.14 that shaved nearly a second off a 20-year-old mark established by James Rankin in 1990.
"It was a great night for our program, certainly historic in terms of the 800 and 1,500 meters," said head coach
Ted Castaneda. "we're very happy with the way all three of our guys performed. They represented Colorado College very well."
