Fifth-ranked Colorado College needed just 52 minutes to defeat Johnson & Wales University in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday night at Reid Gymnasium.
Sophomore outside hitter Kate Squires and junior outside hitter Sarah Schmoker paced the Tiger attack with seven kills apiece and no errors. Squires had only nine attacks and finished with a blistering .778 hitting percentage. Schmoker hit .412 on 17 attacks.
As a team, Colorado College hit .471 with only four errors on 68 swings. Senior middle blocker Emily Perkins played just two sets, but finished with five kills on seven attacks for a .714 hitting percentage. Senior middle blocker Erika Pirotte also had five kills while hitting .500.
Senior setter Colleen Keresey had three of the Tigers' nine service aces, while sophomore outside hitter Laura Goldsmith and Schmoker each added a pair.
Goldsmith paced the defense with 10 digs, while Pirotte had a hand in three blocked shots. CC held the Wildcats to a -.080 team hitting percentage.
All 16 players saw action for the Tigers.
Marissa Headley had team highs of six kills and seven digs to lead JWU. The Wildcats led just once, 1-0 in the second set, but CC ran off six consecutive points and was never threatened again.
Colorado College returns to action on Friday and Saturday when it plays host to the 2010 Molten Volleyball Pikes Peak Challenge. The Tigers open the tournament with Carleton College at 2 p.m. Friday, and the face the University of Laverne in the final match of the day at 6 p.m.
