CC goes the distance to defeat La Verne

Two of the heavyweights in the West Region went toe-to-toe on Friday night in the Molten Volleyball Pikes Peak Challenge, and when the final bell sounded No. 5 Colorado College earned a 24-26, 25-14, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12 decision over the University of La Verne at CC's Reid Gymnasium.

The rematch of last season's regional championship match, also won by the Tigers in five sets, featured two of the top setters in the West Region. CC junior setter Amy Schornack tied her career high with nine kills while hitting .471 with only one error on 17 attacks. Not to be outdone, ULV sophomore setter Kendall Kraiss had a team-leading 10 kills, hitting .429 with one error on 21 attacks.

After trailing 6-4 early in the fifth set, the Tigers used an 8-2 run to build a four-point lead. The Leopards cut their deficit to two three times, but that was as close as they would get. Schornack's last kill gave CC a 14-11 lead, and after a ULV side-out, junior opposite hitter Meredith Ballard sealed the victory with a cross-court shot from the right side.

Colorado College appeared to have the match in hand after building a 23-20 lead late in the fourth set, but La Verne used a pair of kills by sophomore outside hitter Tiffany Johnstone and three Tiger errors to extend the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Schmoker had a match-high 12 kills to pace the CC attack, while Ballard added 11.

The Tigers also ran up an 11-4 advantage in service aces, with senior serving specialist Kate Weig delivering four.

Sophomore libero Laura Goldsmith recorded a team-high 22 digs, while senior middle blocker Emily Perkins had three block solos and an assist.

Freshman libero Morgan Donohue had a match-high 27 digs for the Leos, sophomore middle blocker Catie Logan was in on seven blocked shots and added eight kills.

Colorado College began the day with a 25-14, 25-22, 25-18 victory over Carleton College. Schmoker and Ballard led the Tigers with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Perkins led the defensive effort with 10 kills and a blocked shot.

CC, which improved to 3-0 overall and leads the tournament standings with a 2-0 mark, will face Illinois Wesleyan University at noon on Saturday, and then play host to Otterbein University at 6 p.m. in the final match of the weekend.
