Tigers drop exhibition games against CSU

Sean Smith scored a man-up goal with 2:55 remaining in the game to give Colorado State University a 9-8 victory over Colorado College in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at Washburn Field.

The Rams struck for four consecutive markers after Carson Christman gave the Tigers an 8-5 lead 4:48 into the fourth period.

Braxton Campbell tied the contest with 5:43 to go when he caught the rebound of his own shot that went off the side of the net and shoveled the ball past CC's Zach Steedman. It was one of four goals that were the direct result of a Tiger turnover.

Alex Devlin scored four goals for the Rams, but their real star was senior midfielder Scott Gleston, who won 14 of 17 faceoffs. CSU finished with a 21-14 edge on the draw and needed all seven of the extra opportunities since it generated just three goals in its offensive set.

Moses Taylor gave Colorado College its first lead midway through the third period, then put the Tigers up 6-4 when he scored 13 seconds later off a feed from Zach Pierce.

After Devlin cut CC's lead to 6-5 with a man-up goal, Jack Kreitler came out from behind the net and beat Jack Regan with a low shot to five the Tigers a 7-5 advantage.

Charles Curtis struck for a pair of man-up goals during the last four minutes of the first half, including one that tied the game with 1:47 remaining before the break.

Senior Andy Flax made eight saves for the Rams during the first half, including one on Taylor from point-blank range during the first period. Regan started the third period for CSU and picked up the victory despite stopping just two of the six shots he faced. Regan robbed Curtis with less than three minutes remaining in the third period to prevent CC from eventually taking a four-goal lead.

Freshman Zach Steedman finished with seven saves for the Tigers.

Colorado State capitalized on two of five man-up opportunities, while CC was 2-for-2.

Colorado College plays its first official games next weekend when the Tigers travel to Pennsylvania to face Goucher College and Swarthmore College on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
