CC earns top seed for SCAC tournament

Colorado College wrapped up Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a pair of victories to finish tied for first in the conference during regular-season action, Sunday in San Antonio, Texas.
 
The 18th-ranked Tigers, who improved to 21-8 on the season and 8-2 in SCAC play, began the day beating No. 22 Southwestern University, 19-25, 31-29, 25-18, 25-15. CC ended the day with a 25-22, 25-13, 25-21 sweep of the University of Dallas to finish tied for first with Trinity University in the SCAC.
 
The Tigers dropped their first and only set of the day to Southwestern, but rallied back the next set in a grueling 31-29 second-set victory over the Pirates to tie the match.
 
The second set saw 12 ties with the final tie coming when freshman Emily Phillips hit a kill to tie the match at 29-29. CC finished the set with a kill by freshman Courtney Birkett and an attack error by Southwestern to earn the win.
 
The Tigers won the remaining sets against the Pirates with a combined 35 kills over the third and fourth sets. CC hit a match-high .429 attack percentage in the fourth and final set with 21 kills on three errors in 42 attempts.
 
Senior Kate Squires orchestrated the offense with a career-high 52 assists, while senior Laura Goldsmith led the Tiger attack tying her career-high 19 kills.
 
CC had four players earn double-doubles against Southwestern: Squires had 12 digs with her 52 assists, Goldsmith recorded 23 digs along with her 19 kills, Phillips registered a team-high 25 digs and added 14 kills, and Birkett contributed with 17 digs and 17 kills.
 
The Tigers completed the day winning all three sets against Dallas while tallying six service aces and hitting a .246 attack percentage with 44 kills.
 
Goldsmith and Birkett led the offense against the Crusaders with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Squires organized the CC attack once more with a team-high 38 assists.
 
Defensively, freshman Sophie Merrifield led the team with 21 digs. Phillips and Birkett also played a strong role defensively against Dallas with a combined 30 digs.  
 
Colorado College wraps up the regular-season as it hosts Division II University of Colorado at Colorado Springs for its Dig Pink Night in Reid Arena on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
