Liberty, Knoppel lead CC past George Fox

Kristen Liberty and Kiersten Knoppel led the Colorado College volleyball team with a combined 23 kills to help the Tigers earn a 21-25, 25-16, 27-25, 25-10 victory over George Fox University on Thursday in Newberg, Ore.
 
Liberty earned her second double-double of the season with 11 kills and 13 digs to fuel the Tigers on the outside. The sophomore, who missed the beginning of the season with an injury, also was dominant  behind the serving line with a career-high seven aces, which tied for fifth all-time in school history for most in a single match.
 
Knoppel paced CC in the middle with a career-high 12 kills and six blocks. The freshman also hit a strong .500 attack percentage with only two errors in 20 attempts.
 
The 17th-ranked Tigers started off slow, falling behind 11-6 early in the first set, but went on a 9-3 run to take a 15-14 advantage midway through. It remained close with five ties the rest of the way, the last coming at 21-21. George Fox was able to take the victory when Erin Campbell hit a kill to spark a 4-0 run to finish off the set.  
 
Knotted at 6-6 in the second set, Colorado College took the lead off of a kill by Randi Braak. The Tigers ran off three more points with two service aces by Liberty and finished the run with another kill by Braak.
CC never looked back to earn a commanding 25-16 victory.
 
The third set was a battle of wills with the Tigers coming up on the winning side of a tough 27-25 decision. The final of 15 ties occurred at 25-25 after a Lauren Hahn kill. Liberty earned the remaining two points on a pair of service aces to close out the victory and give CC a 2-1 set advantage.
 
The Tigers finished the match with a dominating fourth-set performance to improve to 11-4 for the season.
 
They began the final set with a slight 9-5 advantage, but turned on the heat with a 10-1 run to take an overwhelming 19-6 lead. The Bruins were able to earn four more points as the Tigers prevailed, 25-10.   
 
Freshman setter Devon Lucero orchestrated the offense again with 42 assists. She also picked up 10 digs, six kills and had a hand in three blocks.
 
Senior Laura Goldsmith led CC in the back row with 16 digs.   
 
Freshmen Emily Phillips and Hahn also turned in strong performances. Phillips grabbed 13 digs and nine kills, while Hahn had eight kills on a team-best .538 attack percentage and four blocks.
 
Colorado College continues play on the road as it takes on Linfield College on Friday at 7 p.m. in McMinnville , Ore.
