Fast start leads to 17-11 win over CUW

Box Score Colorado College struck for eight consecutive goals to open Wednesday night's 17-11 non-conference victory over Concordia University Wisconsin, but the Tigers' coaching staff wants to see more in other parts of the game.

“We're not there yet,” head coach Sean Woods said. “We need to play tougher. We need to pay more attention to the details like winning ground balls and riding harder. Those were our points of emphasis this week and we'll continue to work on them the rest of the season.”

The Tigers finished the contest with a 47-37 advantage in total shots and committed six fewer turnovers, but CUW prevailed in both ground balls (22-16) and face-offs (17-15) which helped the Falcons score six of the seven goals.

CC dominated the early stages of the game, launching 17 shots in the first quarter compared to only four for the Falcons.

Sophomore midfielder Henri Halle recorded five of his season-high six points during the first half, including all three goals.

Colorado College led 8-0 before junior midfielder Justin Krause put Concordia on the scoreboard with the first of his two goals midway through the second quarter.

The Tigers led 11-4 at halftime, and then outscored CUW 5-1 in the third period to take their biggest lead of the game on a tally by junior midfielder Jack Kreitler with 1:10 to play in the third quarter.

Junior attackman Sam Wladyka and sophomore attackman Derek Brueske each struck for a pair of markers in the four quarter when the Falcons used a 6-1 run to cut their final deficit to six.

“We competed hard,” Woods said. “We scored a lot of goals and created some separation early, which allowed a lot of deserving guys to get some playing time.”

Freshman goaltender Chase Murphy recorded nine saves before giving way to junior Zach Steedman with 15 minutes to play.

Sophomore Emmet O'Malley stopped seven shots for Concordia after relieving Zack Davis at the beginning of the second frame.

Colorado College begins Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday when the Tigers visit the University of Dallas. The Tigers also play back-to-back games on Sunday against Southwestern University and Centenary College in Georgetown, Texas.
