True, Colorado College may not have played as perfectly as the results indicate.
But after the first day's action of the 2013 Molten Volleyball CC Classic at Reid Gymasium, and six matches overall into season, the record speaks for itself.
The host Tigers, who posted convincing straight-set victories over Lakeland College (25-11, 25-18, 25-19) and Bridgewater College (25-14, 25-20, 25-17) on Friday, take an unblemished 6-0 mark into Saturday's action while shooting for their second tournament title in two weekends.Â
Regardless of Saturday's outcome against Willamette University in a preliminary-round contest at noon, they'll meet the same Bearcats again in the 4 p.m. championship match, hopefully with a chance to be 8-0 after two weeks of play. Willamette also disposed of Bridgewater and Lakeland by 3-0 counts on Friday.
Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Birkett paced CC in its opener against the Muskies, posting a .357 attack percentage while getting a hand in on five blocks.
Colorado College, which also got five kills apiece from sophomores Devon Lucero and Emily Phillips, trailed at some point in all three games before finding its groove against the visitors from Wisconsin. Lakeland built a 15-10 lead in Game 2 before the Tigers rattled off 15 of the final 18 points.
"We have a tendency to do that," head coach Rick Swan of the temporary lapse in intensity. "We're still young and don't realize we've got to put 'em away in all three games. They haven't quite figured that out yet."Â
They have been figuring out how to win, however.
Lucero, the team's setter, added 17 assists and 11 digs in Friday's first match. Phillips and junior captain Kristen Liberty watched the entire third game from the sideline, as Swan relied mostly on his bench to finish the sweep after building a 22-12 cushion.
In making short work of Bridgewater, a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Colorado College got nine kills apiece from Liberty, Phillips and classmate Kaimara Herron-July, as well as seven from freshman Abbe Holtze and six more from Birkett. Lucero finished with 33 assists while Holtze led the team with 11 digs.Â
