Holtze leads Tigers over UC Santa Cruz

CC splits matches to finish tournament

Box Score Colorado College finished with a pair of splits to round out the Pikes Peak Challenge on Saturday in Reid Arena. The 11th-ranked Tigers fell to No. 22 Nebraska Wesleyan University in five sets, but came back in their final match of the day to pick up a 3-1 victory over UC Santa Cruz.

Sophomore Abbe Holtze, an all-tournament selection, dominated CC's offense combining for 40 kills on the day, including a career-high 22 kills against Nebraska Wesleyan. The outside hitter also earned a pair of double-doubles with 13 digs and 15 digs, respectively.

Sophomore Rebecca Watson, who was also an all-tournament selection, picked up multiple career highs on the day with a career-high 52 assists and tied her career-high four aces against the Prairie Wolves. The setter also grabbed a double-double against the Banana Slugs with 36 assists, while tying her career-high 12 digs.

Despite career-high performances by Watson and Holtze, CC was unable to overcome Nebraska Wesleyan in a hard fought match that went the distance. The Prairie Wolves, who won the tournament, beat the Tigers, 19-25, 19-25, 25-15, 25-20, 16-14.

CC outhit and out served Nebraska Wesleyan (15-3) with a season-high 72 kills along with seven aces, while the Prairie Wolves had 65 kills and just three aces, but too many attack errors would prove to be the deciding factor for the Tigers.

Colorado College bounced back against UC Santa Cruz (11-5) in a 20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-22 victory to finish the tournament.

The Tigers out-performed the Banana Slugs on both sides of the ball. CC had 52 kills offensively and 11 blocks at the net, while holding UC Santa Cruz to 45 kills on a .082 hitting percentage.

An all-tournament team selection, Sophie Merrifield led the defense with 22 digs and served up three aces. The libero also picked up a team-high 25 digs in the first match of the day.

Senior Kristen Liberty was also a key player for the Tigers as she earned 12 kills against the Banana Slugs and 14 kills against the Prairie Wolves.
Colorado College finished the tournament in second place and moved to 20-4 on the season.

The Tigers continue play at home as it returns to conference action on Oct. 10-11. CC plays Austin College at 6 p.m. on Friday in Reid Arena.
