First-year Tigers fuel victory over Puget Sound

Box Score A trio of first-year Tigers were red hot on a bone-chilling Saturday morning at Colorado College's Stewart Field.

Sadie Cole, Colleen Orr and Mary Taussig combined for 10 goals and three assists while leading CC to a 20-3 victory over the University of Puget Sound.

Colorado College didn't waste any time taking an early lead, using goals by Virginia Logue, Maddie Pitkin and Madeline Scherer to grab a 3-0 advantage.

After Cole struck for what proved to be the game winner 11 minutes into the contest, Olivia Keene scored the second of her three goals to keep the Loggers within striking distance at 4-2 with 17:50 to play.

A little more than five minutes later was when CC's freshmen really caught fire. Goals by Cole and Taussig made the score 7-2, and then Madeline Scherer converted on a free-position shot with just 13 seconds left to give the Tigers an 8-2 cushion after 30 minutes.

Colorado College carried the momentum into the second half, getting tallies from Elise Burchard, Taussig and Logue to build a 11-2 lead.

After Cole struck for a man-down marker with a little more than 20 minutes to play, Orr scored three times in a span 4:22.

The Tigers used last-minute goals by Pitkin and Burchard to reach the 20-goal mark for the sixth time this season.

Cole recorded season highs of five goals and seven points to pace the Tigers. Logue, Orr and Scherer found the cage three times apiece. Pitkin and Taussig struck for a pair of goals and added an assist.

CC, which swept the two-game series against UPS by a combined score of 40-9, finished with a 37-9 advantage in total shots.

Goaltender Martha Smith made a pair of saves for Colorado College, while Taussig paced the defenders with seven ground balls, five caused turnovers and three draw controls.

Anna Richmond paced the Loggers with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Hailey Palmore steered aside eight shots for Puget Sound before giving way to Madison Paskett with 19:44 to play.

The Tigers completed their six-game home stand with a 4-2 record and improved to 8-3 overall.

CC plays host to Rockhurst University at 4 p.m. this afternoon to complete its second doubleheader of the season.
