Thoroughbreds Edge CC At the Wire

Box Score Colorado College erased a six-goal first-half deficit to tie the game with 5:45 to play, but Skidmore College scored twice during the final 2:57 and escaped Stewart Field with a 13-11 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Trailing by four after sophomore midfielder Tyler Phillips struck for the fourth of her five goals, freshman attacker Steph Kelly ignited CC's four-goal burst when she converted on a free-position shot with 13:43 to play.

Sophomore midfielder Mary Taussig pulled the Tigers to within two when she scooped up a loose ball and raced through the Thoroughbred defense to beat sophomore goaltender Megan Kolopsky with a shot to the top right corner.

Thirty-six seconds later, senior attacker Iris Rayburn scored from the edge of the crease after taking a pass from Kelly. Riding a wave of momentum, Kelly tied the game with a free-position goal with 5:45 to play.

Colorado College won the ensuing draw control, but after running more than two minutes off the clock, Skidmore's Anna Gubbins forced a turnover and Phillips raced wire-to-wire to notch what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Senior midfielder Brittney Dioneda doubled the Thoroughbreds' lead 24 seconds later, but the Tigers did not go away quietly.

Sophomore defender Abbe Sawabini forced a turnover with 1:46 to go, however Taussig's shot with 1:12 remaining rang off the crossbar. With both teams battling for the loose ball at the edge of the crease, Skidmore was awarded possession and was able to run out the clock.

Kelly led CC with three goals and an assist, while Taussig finished with three tallies.

Junior goaltender Martha Smith made five of her seven saves during the first half to keep her team within striking distance. Taussig had a team-high three ground balls, while sophomore midfielder Sadie Cole paced the Tigers with four draw controls.

Colorado College, which played back to-back games for the second time in seven days, slipped to 4-5 on the season.

Phillips paced the Thoroughbreds with five goals, while senior midfielder Spencer Morgan added three more.

Kolopsky stopped four shot for Skidmore, which improved to 4-1.

The Tigers play host to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Sunday, March 22, at 1 p.m.
