Tigers Dominate Redlands On Senior Day

Box Score It could not have been a more perfect day for the six seniors on the Colorado College women's lacrosse team.

Playing at home for the final time, they figured prominently in Sunday's dominating 20-7 victory over the University of Redlands at Stewart Field.

Offensively, the Tigers scored 20 or more goals for the second time this season. Defensively, they held the Bulldogs to more than six goals below their average. CC also won the battle for loose balls by winning 21 of 30 draw controls and grabbing 19 of 31 ground balls.

"It was a dominating performance against a very good opponent," head coach Susan Stewart said. "We never could write Redlands off, so we had to be at our best for 60 minutes. It was a special day for our seniors."

Senior midfielder Dylan Voneiff was especially effective at both ends of the field, recording a goal and an assist during Colorado College's 7-0 first-half surge and keeping UR's junior midfielder Stephanie Garrett off the score sheet.

"The coaches said my personal mission was to make sure she didn't score," Voneiff said. "I'm really excited because she is their top scorer and she finished with zero points. She was a little frustrated. It was awesome."

Garrett, who entered the game with 37 goals and 46 points, took just two shots and put only one of those on target.

"We gave Dylan that role because No. 4 is explosive and really can make things happen," Stewart said. "Dylan is one of our best athletes and she is a tremendous defender. She rose to the occasion and shut down Redland's top offensive threat."

Senior attacker Iris Rayburn tied her career high with three markers. Senior attacker Virginia Logue and senior midfielder Leigh Nicholl each added a goal and an assist.

Sophomore attacker Dulce Moll scored once and set up two more tallies in a span of 54 seconds as the Bulldogs cut their five-point halftime deficit to 7-5 during the first two minutes of the second half.

Just like the start of the contest when CC fell behind 2-0, the Tigers answered with seven straight markers to build a 14-5 lead.

Sophomore midfielder Mary Taussig and freshman attacker Annie DeFrino led Colorado College with three goals and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Sadie Cole registered four points by scoring twice and setting up two other tallies.

Sophomore midfielder Natalie Shishido and freshman attacker Steph Kelly also recorded a pair of goals.

"It was our best performance of the season," Stewart said. "When we play 60 minutes, the result is always good. We talk about our many offensive weapons all the time, but we don't always get them firing on the same day. Today our players were seeing each other, they were finding each other and they were finishing. That was great to see."

The prime example of that unselfish attitude occurred during the final minute of the first half. After sophomore defender Abbe Sawabini intercepted a pass deep in the defensive zone, the Tigers swarmed the net and any one of three players could have launched a shot before Logue dished the ball to sophomore attacker Lily Benjamin who was coming down the slot to notch the goal which gave CC a 7-2 lead after 30 minutes.

Junior goaltender Martha Smith stopped four shots for Colorado College, including one by freshman attacker Katy Miele at the edge of the crease with 5:45 to play.

Kelly tied her season high with 11 draw controls and grabbed two ground balls for the Tigers, who evened their record at 6-6.

Moll finished with two goals and three assists for Redlands, which slipped to 11-4.

Sophomore goaltender Gigja Hollyday stopped nine shots for the Bulldogs. Freshman Quinn Egan, who played the opening 6:30 of the second half, made one save.

CC finished with a 37-18 advantage in total shots and committed only seven turnovers.

"It was the best possible way to go out in my last home game," Voneiff said. "Our team is finally aware of how good we can be and what we can accomplish if we play to our full potential. If we play like this the rest of the season, I don't see us losing another game."

Colorado College plays its final five games of the regular season on the road, beginning Wednesday night at Colorado State University-Pueblo.
