Tigers Earn 19th Straight NCAA Appearance

Complete Bracket >

Colorado College travels to familiar territory when it makes the program's 19th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship on Friday, Nov. 11.

The Tigers, who are making their fourth trip this season to the Lone Star State, will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a first-round match at the University of Texas at Dallas. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.

For the second year in a row, CC is part of what arguably could be the strongest of the eight regionals. The Texas regional includes seven teams ranked among the top 25 in the most recent AVCA Coaches Poll – No. 3 UT-Dallas, No. 4 CMS, No. 5 Southwestern University, No. 6 CC, No. 16 Trinity University, No. 19 University of La Verne and No. 25 Hendrix College.

"We're excited about our first-round match with a very good opponent in Claremont," head coach Rick Swan said. "We knew going in that it would be a tough bracket, but we're excited to be going to Dallas and having a great match on Friday."

Colorado College is facing the Athenas in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years. In 2013, the Tigers prevailed in four sets (25-21, 31-29, 21-25, 25-23) in a regional semifinal in Atlanta. The next year, CMS earned a measure of revenge with a 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 15-13) victory in the second round in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Friday's winner will face either La Verne (22-6) or Southwestern (30-4) at 1:30 p.m. CT. On the other side of the regional bracket, Hendrix (24-7) squares off with Trinity (27-7) in the first round, while Whitworth University (21-5) faces host Texas-Dallas (30-2).

Leading CC is a pair of student-athletes who received top individual honors from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Senior outside hitter Abbe Holtze was named Player of the Year, while middle hitter Marguerite Speathling was voted Freshman of the Year.

Colorado College, which finished the regular season with a 27-5 record, is making the program's 26th overall appearance in the national tournament. The Tigers, who advanced to the Elite 8 in 2009, own an all-time record of 15-25, including an 11-18 mark during Swan's 19-year tenure.
