Wittenberg Prevails In Battle of the Tigers

Box Score Senior Thomas and Andrew Fuss combined for five goals and four assists to lead the Wittenberg University men's lacrosse team to a 13-10 victory over Colorado College on Friday afternoon at Washburn Field.

Thomas Fuss scored twice and set up another goal during a 5-1 run that snapped a 3-3 tie and gave the visitors a four-point lead midway through the second quarter.

CC answered with goals by freshman midfielder Tom Haller and extra-man tallies by junior attackman Austin Davie and freshman attacker Drew Wiseman, but the 8-7 deficit that proved to be as close as the Colorado Tigers would get.

Wittenberg's Jeff Sherman struck for the only goal of the third quarter with just 18 seconds on the clock, and then his team scored four of the first five markers in the fourth quarter to open its largest lead at 13-8.

Sophomore attackman Robbie Stern struck twice during the final 1:38, but Wittenberg won the final faceoff and ran out the last 45 seconds.

"Credit Wittenberg," Colorado College head coach Sean Woods said. "When push came to shove, they played their best ball. Every pass was completed, every clear was completed and every possession was effective with purpose."

Stern paced the CC attack with three goals and three assists, while Wiseman finished with two scores and set up two others.

Colorado College finished with a 40-38 edge in total shots and both teams gathered 34 ground balls.

Senior goaltender Chase Murphy made nine of his 12 saves during the second half.

Freshman midfielder Parker Woo led CC with six ground balls and went 5-for-11 on faceoffs.

Each team committed 22 turnovers, unfortunately 15 of Colorado College's were of the unforced variety and those mistakes severely limited its scoring chances in the second half.

"It was a lack of discipline," Woods said. "We didn't pass the ball with purpose. It looked like our guys just expected good things to happen.

"When we rallied in the second quarter, it was the result of us playing hard. We showed some urgency, some purpose. That's how we need to play all the time. If we don't, we're not going to beat good teams."

Thomas Fuss finished with four goals and five points, while his twin brother scored once and added three assists.

Junior Nick Gregory stopped 11 shots for Wittenberg, which squared its record at 2-2.

The Ohio Tigers won 17 of 27 faceoffs, thanks to the efforts of Brent Whitehead who was successful on 17 of 26 attempts.

Will Stocker led the visitors with seven ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers.

"There were a lot of 50-50 balls, most of which went their way," Woods said. "Ours guys need to understand how important ground balls are in this game.

"I'm going to put the toughest 10 guys on the field. It's not about skill anymore. It's about toughness. When there's a ball on the ground, I want our guys to attack it with determination and be committed."

Colorado College returns to action on Tuesday, March 15, when the Tigers take on Ithaca College in Tampa.
