Box Score Colorado College turned in its most complete performance of the young season at both ends of the field on Monday afternoon and sailed past the United States Coast Guard Academy, 17-0, at Stewart Field.
The Tigers dominated all facets of the game, especially draw controls where they were nearly perfect by winning 17 of 18. Those extra possessions led to a decisive 43-5 advantage in total shots.
CC also grabbed 26 ground balls, compared to only 14 for the Bears, and its pressure defense caused 10 of Coast Guard's 25 turnovers.
Colorado College's
Martha Smith stopped the only three shots the Bears put on target while posting her first career shutout. The senior goalkeeper played in 30 minutes in the program's most recent two whitewashes against the University of Dallas and Augsburg College on March 1, 2014.
At the other end of the field, sophomore attacker
Steph Kelly scored the only goal the Tigers needed 16 seconds into the game after taking a feed from junior midfielder
Sadie Cole.
Junior attacker
Lily Benjamin scored three times during the first half as CC reached double-digits during the first 30 minutes for third game in a row.
Kelly led the Tigers with four goals and seven points, while Cole finished with two markers of her own and dished out a game-high four assists.
Colorado College also got three goals from first-year attacker
Nikki Blair, while junior midfielder
Mary Taussig recorded five points on a pair of goals and three assists.
Taussig paced the defensive effort with game highs of seven ground balls, four caused turnovers and six draw controls. Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Angel Fay made 14 saves for the Bears, who dropped to 0-3.
Sophomore defenders Kira Dabrowski and AnFei Neal each scooped up three ground balls for Coast Guard.
The Tigers, who improved to 3-0, play host to No. 14 Messiah College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. on Washburn Field.
