Box Score 2 Colorado College recorded a pair of three-set Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victories on Saturday and strengthened its grip on first place atop the league standings in the process.
The second-ranked Tigers began the day with a 25-12, 25-18, 25-19 win over Austin College and finished the weekend with a 25-11, 25-14, 25-18 win over Centenary College.
With Saturday's victories, CC improved to 22-1 overall and 9-0 in the SCAC. Thanks to No. 5 Southwestern University's come-from-behind victory at No. 3 Trinity University, the Tigers now hold a two-match lead over both of its nationally-ranked rivals atop the conference standings.
In the win over Austin, senior middle hitter
Glenna Yancey came up big with nine kills and five blocked shots. She also led the Tigers with a .571 hitting percentage, pounding down nine kills on 14 attempts with only one error.
Sophomore outside hitter
Haley Harris recorded nine kills of her own while hitting .320, and junior right side hitter
Aria Dudley hit .300 with seven kills on 20 swings with just one error.
Sophomore setter
Lizzy Counts hit .455 with five kills on 11 attempts. She also dished out 24 assists and recorded three first-set aces when the Tigers grabbed the early momentum by scoring the first six points of the match.
The 'Roos kept the score close during the early stages of the second half and trailed just 11-10 after a kill by senior outside hitter Dani DeWitt. However, Colorado College scored seven of the next nine points to open an 18-12 lead and Austin never got closer than four points.
Austin jumped out to a 4-1 lead to start the third set and led 7-6 lead on another kill by DeWitt. CC answered with a 10-2 run to open a seven-point lead on a kill by Harris and was never threatened after the rest of the way.
In the final match of the weekend against Centenary, the Tigers hit a season-best .408.
Sophomore outside hitter
Jordan Mullen led the way with 15 kills and hit .636 with one error on 22 attempts. Dudley was close behind with 13 kills and hit .526.
Senior outside hitter Desiree Frey led the Ladies with 12 kills, while sophomore libero Marissa Sandoval had a match-high 11 digs.
Colorado College travels to Shreveport, La., next weekend for SCAC Cross-Divisional matches at Centenary College.
The Tigers face Southwestern and Trinity on Saturday, and then Texas Lutheran University and Schreiner on Sunday.
