Box Score 2 The second-ranked Colorado College volleyball team clinched the outright Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season crown by defeating No. 3 Southwestern University and No. 4 Trinity University on Saturday at Centenary College.
CC, improved to 24-1 overall and 12-0 in the SCAC, claimed their fourth outright conference title and fifth overall with a 25-19, 24-14, 25-19 victory over Trinity in their second match of the day. In its first match, Colorado College defeated Southwestern 25-22, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 15-10.
CC also made a compelling case for being ranked No. 1 in Division III by posting its fourth and fifth victories this season over opponents ranked in the top-five of the AVCA poll.
In the sweep of Trinity, sophomore outside hitter
Jordan Mullen led Colorado College with 13 kills, including five in the first set when CC set the tone for the match.
Senior middle hitter
Glenna Yancey hit .500 with six kills on 12 attacks, and had a hand in three blocked shots as Colorado College held TU to a .143 team hitting percentage.
Sophomore right side hitter
Aria Dudley also had six kills, hit .385 and had four block assists.
The first two sets were similar in that CC started quickly, watched as Trinity pulled to within a pair of points, and then utilized big runs to pull away in the end.
Trinity had its first substantial lead early in the third set, but Colorado College erased a two-point deficit with an 8-1 run to grab a 15-10 lead. TU scored three consecutive points to get back to within two points, only to see CC regain the momentum with a 6-2 run that resulted in a solid 21-15 lead. Â
After Trinity pulled to within four points, kills by Mullen and sophomore outside hitter
Haley Harris sealed the match for the Colorado College.
In the win over Southwestern, Mullen notched her first career double-double with a team-high 16 kills and 16 digs.
Harris recorded her fourth double-double of the season, putting down 11 kills and matching her career best with 20 digs.
Dudley, the reigning SCAC Defensive Player of the Week, hit a match-high .394 with 15 kills on 33 attacks with only two errors.
Sophomore libero
Anna Gurolnick led the Tigers with 25 digs, her fifth match of the season with 20 or more, while Yancey had a hand in four blocks.
With the score tied at 6-6 in the fifth set, a Dudley kill ignited a 4-0 run that put the Tigers in control. After Brittany Hohlt pulled Southwestern to within a point, Yancey had a block and a kill to bookend a three-point surge that gave the Tigers a 13-7 lead.
The Pirates fought back with three consecutive points to cut their deficit in half, but Colorado College forced a hitting error to claim the next point and closed out the match on a combined block by Yancey and Mullen.
Kate Mitchell led the Pirates with 17 kills, while Hohlt added 15. Jamison Duck recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs.
The SCAC Cross-Divisional continues on Sunday with the Tigers playing matches against Texas Lutheran University and Schreiner University at 10 a.m. and noon CT, respectively.
