CC Claims SCAC Title with Epic Comeback

Box Score The No. 1-ranked Colorado College volleyball team claimed its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship since 2012 with an epic comeback on Saturday afternoon.

CC overcame a two-set deficit and a 4-0 hole in the fifth set to record a heart-stopping 22-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-13 over No. 5-ranked Trinity University.

Haley Harris put down six of her match-high 22 kills in the fifth set, including the final two of the championship. The sophomore outside hitter added 11 digs to complete her second double-double of the tournament and her seventh of the season. That performance earned Harris a spot on the all-tournament team.

Championship MVP Jordan Mullen added 15 kills on 33 attacks with only one error, and finished with a sparkling .424 hitting percentage.

Sophomore middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling put down 12 kills on an error-free 24 attacks.

Facing a do-or-die situation in the third set, Harris smashed five kills as Colorado College erased a 12-10 TU advantage with seven unanswered points. Trinity pulled to within 20-18 on a kill from senior outside hitter Madeline McKay, but CC countered with a 5-1 run to extend the match.

TU scored the first four points of the fourth set, but Colorado College clawed its way back to take a 15-14 lead on a Harris kill. CC led 20-16 before Trinity took a 23-22 lead on an ace by senior outside hitter Kirby Smith.

Colorado College responded with back-to-back kills from Mullen and then sophomore setter Lizzy Counts unleashed one of her four aces to even the match two sets apiece.

Trinity took an early 4-0 lead in the fifth set, only to watch CC storm back with a 7-2 run to take its first lead. Smith put TU ahead for the final time at 10-9, but kills from Mullen and Harris put Colorado College back in front.

After Smith tied the score at 11-11, CC took the lead for good on a kill from Mullen and an ace from junior middle hitter Myca Steffey-Bean. The teams traded kills until Harris closed out the match.

Sophomore setter Lizzy Counts, who also was an all-tournament selection, dished out 53 assists, dealt four aces and had a hand in four blocked shots for Colorado College.

Sophomore libero Anna Gurolnick produced a match-high 18 digs, while Mullen, Spaethling and Steffey-Bean were involved in three blocks apiece.

McKay led TU with 19 kills and capped her double-double with 10 digs. Smith also doubled up with 13 kills and 14 digs.

CC improved to 31-1 and secured the program's 20th-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship.

The brackets for this year's tournament will be unveiled on Monday at 10:30 a.m. MT on NCAA.com.
