CC Rallies to Stun Augustana, Stay Undefeated

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Colorado College snatched victory from the jaws of defeat on Saturday night to win the 2017 CC Classic and push its record to 4-0.

Trailing two sets to one against Augustana College in the tournament finale, junior middle hitter Myca Steffey-Bean recorded three blocks and a pair of kills to make sure the match went to a fifth set, then sophomore libero Anna Gurolnick served eight straight points to open the fifth and propel the Tigers a 25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 25-11, 15-5 triumph.

"Blocking is the best way to get the team fired up and it's one way a player can change the outcome of the match," Steffey-Bean said. "We work on blocking every day in practice and we knew we had the ability to shut down their attack."

Steffey-Bean's seven-block, five-kill performance earned her a spot on the all-tournament team, along with senior middle hitter Glenna Yancey.

Sophomore setter Lizzy Counts was named tournament MVP in a vote of the opposing coaches. Counts finished the match with 45 assists, 12 digs, three blocks and a pair of aces.

Senior outside hitter Reagan Folaron led the CC attack with 16 kills. Junior rightside hitter Aria Dudley reached double-figures with 12, while sophomore outside hitter Haley Harris added 11.
Gurolnick recorded four of her five aces in the fifth set and led the Tigers with 19 digs.

"We found a way to win," head coach Rick Swan said. "We re-focused and started doing what we work on in practice. We got the momentum back at the end of the third set and that carried us through the last two sets."

Senior middle hitter Maissie Musick, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, junior outside hitter Taryn VanEarwage and sophomore middle hitter Grace Bialobok all had eight kills for the Vikings. Bialobok and Musick also combined for 12 blocked shots.

Colorado College began the day with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 victory over Berry College.

Sophomore outside hitter Haley Harris hit .467 with eight kills on 15 attempts with only one error, while sophomore middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling hit .500 with seven kills on 12 swings with just one error.

Yancey led the Tigers with nine kills.

Gurolnick finished with 16 digs to lead the Tiger defense. Also reaching double figures were Folaron with 15, freshman defensive specialist Rachel Krutz with 12 and Counts with 11.

Spaethling and Yancey each had a hand in three blocked shots as the CC defense finished with six blocks and held the Vikings to a .000 attack percentage.

In the first set, Colorado College snapped a 7-7 tie with a 14-7 run and Berry could not get closer that seven points.

The Vikings overcame a four-point deficit to grab a 22-21 late in the second set, but the Tigers rallied with a 5-2 surge that finished with kills by Dudley and Spaethling.

CC scored 12 of the first 13 points in the third set and were never threatened as they closed out the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Emily Hancock, who was an all-tournament selection, and junior middle hitter Hannah Billiard led the Vikings with five kills apiece, while senior libero Elizabeth Ragland registered a match-high 20 digs.

Colorado College will be at home again next week when the Tigers play host to the 2017 ACM Tournament at Reid Arena.
