Defense Dominates in Victory Over Kean

Box Score Colorado College is making a habit of scoring 20 or more goals in a game, but on Friday afternoon at Washburn Field, the defense made a statement of its own in the 21-2 victory over Kean University.

The two goals were the fewest allowed by CC this season and marked the third consecutive game the Tigers held their opponent to fewer than 10.

Colorado College's man-down unit also successfully killed all three of the team's penalties for a total of three minutes.

Senior Riley Hoffman led the defensive effort with a pair of caused turnovers for CC.

Sophomore goaltender Andrew Harwood recorded double-digit saves for the fourth time this season, stopping 10 shots in 45 minutes between the pipes.

Senior attacker Robbie Stern and sophomore attacker Coby Petau struck for goals during the opening minute and the Tigers led 3-0 when senior midfielder Sam Mathai scored off of a feed from junior midfielder Daniel Lunghamer 3:17 into the contest.

The Cougars did their best not to let Colorado College build an insurmountable first-quarter lead and cut their deficit to one on markers from sophomore attackman Jake Frankovits and junior midfielder Tyler Roberto, but the Tigers added four more goals during the final 7:14.

The Tigers added six more tallies in the second quarter, including goals from sophomore midfielder Ben Sudduth and Lunghamer during the final 40 seconds, to extended their lead to 13-2 after 30 minutes.

Any notion of a Kean comeback was dashed early in the third quarter when CC added markers from Petau and Stern during the first 4:01.

Stern led the Colorado College attack with five goals and a pair of assists, while Petau (4g/1a) and Lunghamer (2g/3a) each produced five points.

Junior midfielder Parker Woo won 13 of 16 faceoffs and led the Tigers with seven ground balls.

As a team, CC won 20 of 27 faceoffs.

The Tigers finished the game with a 61-20 advantage in total shots and a 32-17 cushion in ground balls.

Starting goaltender Ryan Sieb had nine saves for the Cougars, who slipped to 3-2.

Sophomore defender Matt Palmieri led Kean's defensive effort with three ground balls and a caused turnover.

Colorado College travels to Philadelphia next week for neutral-site games against Vassar College on Wednesday, March 21, and Babson College on Friday, March 23.
