Box Score Colorado College ran into a hot goaltender on an otherwise blustery day and dropped a 19-9 decision to Franklin & Marshall College in a regional semifinal of the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.
Danielle Harrington stopped 16 shots, including 10 in the second half, as the No. 7-ranked Diplomats earned a date with The College of New Jersey in Sunday's regional championship. The No. 1-ranked Lions defeated Bowdoin College, 13-7, in the first game of the day.
"Franklin & Marshall is very good and there is a reason they are ranked No. 7 in the country," head coach
Susan Stuart said. "Their poise was evident from the outset and their goalie was outstanding."
The Tigers were within a goal after sophomore midfielder
Robin Hilderman scored 6:34 into the game, but F&M broke the game open with a 7-1 run and took a commanding 10-3 lead when Paige Moriarty scored 3:11 into the second half.
Junior midfielder
Ellie Meyer scored the second of her two goals on a free-positon shot a little more than four minutes later, but a 5-1 run by the Diplomats ended any hopes of another magical NCAA comeback for Colorado College.
Franklin & Marshall extended its lead to double digits when Jane Cote scored midway through the second half; however, CC answered with a 4-1 surge to pull to within seven with 8:40 to play.
Senior attacker
Steph Kelly, who finished her career as Colorado College's career leader in points and assists, started the run with an unassisted tally. Sophomore attackers
Eva King and
Allie Thuet, along with junior attacker
Nikki Blair, also found the net for the Tigers.
"We did a much better job in the second half after we regained our composure, but the four posts we hit were back breaking," Stuart said.
Meyer dished out a pair of assists to cap her four-point performance. Kelly and Thuet produced a goal and an assist.
The Diplomats finished the game with a 23-19 advantage in ground balls and a 15-14 edge in draw controls.
Moriarty led Franklin & Marshall with seven points on four goals and three assists. Cote also scored four times and set up another score.
F&M launched 40 total shots, compared to 31 for the Tigers.
Freshman goaltender
Alena Stern finished with nine saves for CC.
Hilderman led the Tigers with four ground balls, while Meyer and Kelly each recorded five draw controls.
"I'm proud of how our young team battled, especially during the second half," Stuart said. "Despite having our two career leaders,
Annie DeFrino and
Steph Kelly graduate, there is a lot of talent on our roster and a lot of excitement about the program's future."
Colorado College finished the year with a 15-5 record, which tied the program record for victories in single season.
