Box Score 2 The second-ranked Colorado College volleyball team improved to 10-0 with a pair of victories on Friday afternoon in the 2018 Pikes Peak Challenge at Reid Gymnasium.

The Tigers began the day with a 25-14, 25-10, 25-12 victory over Johnson & Wales University in their first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match of the season, then defeated Covenant College 25-10, 23-25, 25-7, 25-18 in the night cap.

A first-set kill by freshman middle hitter Brea Chaney pulled JWU to within 11-10 in the first set, but CC scored the next five points to ignite a 14-4 run.

The second and third sets were never in doubt as the Tigers raced to commanding leads and were never threatened.

Alex Nickerson put down seven kills to lead the Colorado College attack.

Georgia Mullins hit .750 with six kills on eight attacks as the Tigers finished with a season-best .425 team attack percentage.

Myca Steffey-Bean went 6-for-9 with just one error and hit .556.

Anna Gurolnick recorded a match-high 12 digs, while junior defensive specialist
Caitlin Laurence reached double-digits with 10.

CC also served nine aces, which was one of their season high set against North Central College in the season opener. Sophomore defensive specialist
Rachel Krutz had nine aces, while Laurence added a pair.

Junior outside hitter Brooke Paxton recorded team highs of five kills and 10 digs for the Cougars.

In the victory over Covenant, the Tigers jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in the first set and a combined block by Steffey-Bean and junior setter
Lizzy Counts gave CC a 16-6 advantage leading to a Covenant timeout.

Haley Harris posted six kills in the first set, while Steffey-Bean collected four.

The Tigers kept the momentum going in set two, winning the first five points, including a pair of aces from Counts.

The Scots rebounded to take an 8-7 lead and neither team held more than a two-point advantage until Covenant took a 20-17 lead on a kill by Hannah Harris. CC rallied to even the score at 23-all, but Riley Howe and Sara Delk each produced a kill to give Covenant the second set.

The Tigers used eight total blocks and a 13-0 run, served by Steffey-Bean, to roll through the third set, then never trailed in the fourth set to remain undefeated.

Marguerite Spaethling led the Tigers with 15 kills apiece, while Counts posted a match-high 39 assists.

Colorado College and Covenant will meet again on Saturday at noon.
