CC Falls to Trinity In SCAC Championship Match

Box Score Despite a 21-kill performance from senior middle hitter Marguerite Spaethling, the Colorado College volleyball team dropped a 22-25, 26-24, 27-25, 25-17 decision to Trinity University in the championship match of the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament on Sunday afternoon.

CC slipped to 30-4, but is expected to earn the program's 22nd-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's volleyball championship when the 2019 bracket is unveiled on Monday.

Georgia Mullins, who was named to the all-tournament team, hit .381 with nine kills on 21 swings with only one error. The sophomore middle hitter also had a hand in four of the team's blocked shots.

Senior setter Lizzy Counts also earned all-tournament honors after posting a double-double with 50 assists and 10 digs. The three-time first-team all-SCAC selection improved her career total to 4,083 assists.

Colorado College was red-hot early in the match, posting a .318 hitting percentage in the first set.

CC thought it won the second set when Spaethling's slide attack toward the middle of the court went off a Trinity block before going out of bounds, but after a prolonged discussion that included both linesmen, the call was changed and TU won the next two points to pull even at one set apiece.

Colorado College led throughout most of the third set, but Trinity took advantage of another set-point call and rallied to take a two-sets-to-one lead. With CC leading 24-21, Spaethling's attack appeared to go off a defender near the back line, but the touch went unnoticed and TU came from behind to take the set.

That momentum carried into the fourth set and the top-seeded Tigers raced to an early 14-7 lead and never let Colorado College get closer than five points.

It marked the first time in four tries that Trinity defeated CC in an SCAC championship match.
