For five rounds, No. 7 Colorado College and No. 20 UC Santa Cruz volleyball teams traded blows, but thanks to an All-America performance from senior middle hitter
Georgia Mullins, the Tigers were the team still standing at the end of the night.
Mullins produced her second career double-double with 21 kills and a career-high 15 digs, and tied her career-high with seven total blocks, to lead CC to a 25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 24-26, 15-10 victory over the Banana Slugs on Friday night.
The Tigers also received double-doubles from sophomore outside hitter
Isabella Lipacis and senior outside hitter
Isabella Vasquez.
Lipacis finished with 17 kills and 12 digs, while Vasquez added 11 kills and 14 digs. Vasquez also had a hand in six blocks, two of which were solos.
After falling behind 4-3 in the fifth set, a Mullins kill ignited a 6-1 run that ended with a kill by Lipacis. Two more Lipacis kills gave Colorado College an 11-7 lead, then Mullins produced a blocked shot and two kills to close out the victory, including a kill on an overpass for match point.
The Tigers had UCSC on the ropes late in the fourth set, but the Slugs got off the mat and scored the final four points to extend the match.
In the third set, it was CC that caught lightning in a bottle. The Tigers utilized a 17-6 surge to erase a five-point deficit and reclaim the lead and the momentum. Â
Sophomore setter
Jenny Jenks dished out 47 assists and added 11 digs for Colorado College, which improved to 20-3 overall. The Tigers reached the 20-win mark for the 19th consecutive season.
Samantha Taylor led UCSC with 17 kills, while Giovanna Martins had a match-high 19 digs.
Claire Okerlund posted a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.
In CC's first match, Mullins put down a match-high 14 kills and added nine digs to lead the Tigers to a 25-18, 25-13, 25-20 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan University.
With her second kill in the first set, Mullins became the 21st player in program history to record 800 or more in her career. She finished the night in 20th place with 832.
Lipacis recorded her tenth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 14 digs, while Vasquez finished with 10 kills and eight digs.
In addition to leading Colorado College to a .304 team hitting percentage, sophomore setter
Jenny Jenks recorded 37 assists and tied her career high with five kills on six swings for a .833 hitting percentage.
The Tigers trailed 14-11 midway through the first set, but rallied on the strength of a 14-4 surge to take the set and the momentum.
CC raced to a 7-1 lead in the second set and was never threatened.
The PrairieWolves were within 11-9 in the third set, but a 5-1 run gave the Tigers the separation they needed and Colorado College went on to close out its 12 sweep of the season.
Freshman outside hitter Addie Thomas led Nebraska Wesleyan with nine kills, while Lexi Booth and Kennady Klein recorded nine digs apiece.
The 2021 CC Invitational continues on Saturday with five more matches. Colorado College plays host to DeSales University at 4 p.m. and Cornell College in the tournament finale at 6 p.m.
